Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better than the general public by the name of Queen Latifah is an American performer, actress, and singer. in film, music and television, Queen Latifah has received two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award, six more Grammy nominations, and nods to the Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's parents separated when she was 10 years old. Latifah was born into the Baptist congregation and went to Catholic schools at Newark New Jersey. The stage name Latifah which means delicate and gentle in Arabic was handed to her her cousin when she was eight. Being a tall girl, the 5'10 tall Latifah was a power forward on the basketball team at her high school. She sang the song home from the musical The Wiz in a high school performance. Latifah started to beatbox with the Ladies Fresh. Latifah joined the Flavor Unit's first group that included a number of MCs and producer DJ Mark 45 King. Mark James aka the 45 King, recorded a version of Queen Latifah's Princess of the Posse rap. He gave the recording to host Yo! MTV Raps Faddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music was signed by Latifah upon hearing the track. The singer released her debut single Wrath of My Madness, in the year 1988.
